Luxury Wedding in Rome: A Planner’s Guide to Venues, Ceremonies and the Perfect Weekend

Rome is my home. It is also where I have watched so many couples from around the world say “I do” against a backdrop no designer could ever build: a candlelit dinner among imperial ruins, a sunset aperitivo above the city, a ballroom that has hosted Roman nobility for more than a century.

If you are dreaming of a luxury wedding in Rome, this guide is for you. I’ll take you inside the venues where I have created real weddings, explain your ceremony options as a foreign couple, and share how to turn your wedding into an unforgettable Roman weekend.

Why Rome is the ultimate destination wedding city

Few places combine monumental history, aristocratic elegance and genuine Italian warmth the way Rome does. Your guests don’t just attend a wedding; they discover a city of art, food and golden light, often for the first time.

Rome is also easy to reach: two international airports and world-class hotels make guest travel far simpler than in many remote destinations. For couples who want both grandeur and convenience, that matters.

Rome wedding venues I know by heart

Villa Adriana, Tivoli: dinner among the ruins

Less than an hour from the city, Hadrian’s Villa is one of the most breathtaking settings in the world. I designed a wedding at Villa Adriana around a long imperial table glowing with hundreds of candles, letting the ancient architecture become the scenery.

Villa Aurelia, on the Janiculum Hill

Built in the 17th century on the Gianicolo, Villa Aurelia offers Italian gardens, terraces and sweeping views over the rooftops of Rome. It’s where I planned the destination wedding of Domy and Chris, an evening that moved from al fresco dinner to a party under the stars.

Palazzo Brancaccio: Roman grandeur

Completed in 1880 and designed by architect Gaetano Koch, Palazzo Brancaccio was the last great palace built by Rome’s patrician families. Frescoed halls, chandeliers and a private garden in the heart of the city make it perfect for couples who love a formal, black-tie celebration.

Palazzo Shedir: an intimate palazzo near the Spanish Steps

For smaller, highly refined celebrations in the historic center, Palazzo Shedir is a hidden gem: noble salons, ornate ceilings and rare privacy just steps from Piazza di Spagna. Ideal for an intimate wedding dinner or a gala evening.

Castello di Bracciano: a medieval fairytale

A 15th-century castle overlooking Lake Bracciano, a short drive from Rome. Castello di Bracciano is a venue I have returned to many times, including for multicultural celebrations that blend different traditions.

Getting legally married in Rome as a foreign couple

Civil ceremony. Rome’s city hall offers some remarkable settings, the most famous being the Sala Rossa on the Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio), overlooking the Roman Forum. The Complesso Vignola Mattei, near the Baths of Caracalla, is another beautiful option. Foreign couples usually need a nulla osta (certificate of no impediment) from their embassy or consulate, and the requirements vary by nationality. I cover every step in my guide to getting married in Italy.

Religious ceremony. Rome is home to some of the most beautiful churches in the world, and a Catholic wedding here is an unforgettable experience. It requires specific paperwork from your home parish, so start early.

Symbolic ceremony. Many international couples choose to marry legally at home and celebrate with a symbolic ceremony in Rome. It can take place in the villa gardens and include rituals from any culture.

Turn your wedding into a Roman weekend

The most memorable luxury weddings in Rome last more than one day:

  • Welcome party: at Villa Livia on the Appia Antica I organised a relaxed yet elegant pizza party that broke the ice between guests from all over the world.
  • Private experiences: after-hours visits, food tours or a photo walk through the city at dawn.
  • Farewell brunch: a slow goodbye on a terrace before everyone heads home.

My practical tips

  • Timing: spring and early autumn offer the softest light and perfect temperatures for outdoor dinners.
  • Logistics: the historic center has restricted traffic zones, so transfers and timings must be planned venue by venue.
  • Always a plan B: every outdoor moment needs an elegant indoor alternative.
  • Book early: the most exclusive venues and city hall dates are reserved well in advance.
